Dark alex LEDA - Legacy Software Loader beta 0.1

Dark AleX does it again with the release of LEDA, the Legacy Software Loader.

LEDA integrates into M33 custom firmwares to let you run your old 1.0 and 1.5 kernel-based homebrew apps. It also works on the Slim. Here are the release notes from Dark Alex:

Description:

* LEDA is a program that integrates into M33 custom firmwares to let some old 1.00/1.50 homebrew to run.
* To avoid waste of memory, leda is only loaded when necessary.
* Current compatibility is unknown as is still in beta.
* Although it may work on previous m33 versions, it has only be tested on 5.00 M33.
* The development of LEDA doesn't mean that development of 1.50 kernel addon will be ceased. 1.50 addon is very easy to code, and thus it will still be coded for almost full 1.5 compatibility, but LEDA has some advantages over it.

Advantages:

* It works on slim too
* It doesn't need much flash space
* You don't need to care about which folder your homebrew is.
* LEDA first tries to load the homebrew program normally. If it works, then the homebrew is a 3.XX+ one, and leda terminates itself to not waste RAM. Otherwise, leda does some patches to load the 1.0/1.5 homebrew.
* Unlike 1.50 kernel addon, LEDA tries to be independent of firmware. This means that whenever a new version of M33 is released, leda will probably work without need of an update.

Disadvantages:

* Less compatibility. Anyways, I will try to make LEDA compatible with those old homebrew that are still useful today because they weren't updated or because they have a better old version.

Install instructions:

* Copy LEDA folder to /PSP/GAME and run it. The program will install a prx in the system, this will be done very quickly. After this, you can already try to run 1.0/1.5 homebrew normally from XMB; LEDA folder is not needed anymore in the ms and you can delete it if you want.

Also note that this is not compatible with Time Machine. Now, enjoy!

JK108 has released an update for Ultimate PSPTube, which now has support for a grand-slamming total of 26 video streaming sites, right on your PSP. Aside from additional sites, Ultimate PSPTube v1.6 also incorporates a bunch of fixes most of you guys will surely appreciate.

iR Shell 4.8 Released

This is mainly a maintenance release with a few bug fixes. It also adds a new feature to support homebrews to use extra slim memory.

New Features for PSP Slim:
- Added support to homebrews that are built with the option PSP_LARGE_MEMORY, that is, to use the extra slim memory. When running these homebrews under iR Shell, they will have access to another 26MB slim RAM. Pls note 2MB of slim RAM is reserved for iR Shell.
- Enhance the HTML Viewer (originally developed by Dark_AleX) to use the extra slim memory. These should help to reduce "Not enough memory" message when accessing larger web contents. The HTML Viewer can be accessed via predefined homebrew #1 icon.



Bug Fixes:
- Some homebrews weren't correctly recognized by iR Shell and application names were displayed as garbage.
- When setting np9660 mode in iR Configurator, some homebrews failed to launch.
- Launching PS1 games via popsloader wasn't working properly.
- Copying a large file from ms0: to nethost0: will crash the system.

Top 10 Game System

How cool would it be to be able to play old Nintendo or Sega games on your PSP? Well, if you can find the game ROMs, you can play them, thanks to the PlayStation Portable homebrew community. I've picked what seems to be the best or most popular emulator for each of ten systems that can be emulated on the PSP.

1.NES: Nintendo Entertainment System

NesterJ is the most-used, and most-likes NES emulator for PSP. It runs well, with most games playing at their full intended speed. This homebrew is frequently updated, and there are few reported problems from users. It seems to have to most features of all the available NES emulators.

2. SNES: Super Nintendo

SNES9x is a SNES emulator developed for the PC; the Unofficial SNES9x for PSP is an unofficial port of the emulator for PSP. Of the available SNES emulators, this one has the least amount of frameskip when running games at full speed. It is the most frequently updated and has the most available options.

3. N64: Nintendo 64

It's not actually finished yet, but it looks like Monkey 64 is going to be a great emulator. Considering that most of the homebrew community didn't think there'd ever be a working N64 emulator for PSP, the progress on this one has been impressive.

4. Gameboy & Gameboy Color

Rin is an emulator for both Gameboy and Gameboy color (which makes sense, as the GBC could also play older Gameboy games). It seems to handle just about every GB and GBC game without problems, and it's got some nice features.

5. Gameboy Advance

PSPGBA is a nice-looking Gameboy Advance emulator. It has multiple languages to choose from, and can be adjusted to boost the speed for some games that may run slow.

6. Sega Genesis

PSP Genesis is a fast Sega Genesis emulator, able to run most games at full speed. It also has lots of features and can play most Sega Genesis games without problems.

7. Atari 2600

StellaPSP is a port of the Stella Atari 2600 emulator. A big advantage of Atari emulation is that there are quite a few game ROMs that can be downloaded legally for free. While the latest version of Stella isn't perfect yet, it does work, and a new version is on the way.

8. Commodore 64
C64PSP is a PSP port of the Frodo C64 emulator. It's stable and runs games at full speed without problems. It's got some great features and the latest version even seems to have some compatibility with firmware version 2.0.


9. NeoGeo Pocket

It's not perfect, but NGPSP does run some NeoGeo Pocket games without too many problems. It's the only PSP NeoGeo Pocket emulator out there, so if you want to play NGP games on your PlayStation Portable, this is what you need.

10. NeoGeo CD

This emulator has lots of options and, while it still has bugs, there are frequent updates as the homebrewer works out the problems, and many games are quite playable.

PSPdisp v0.1 homebrew app

Developer Jochen Schleu has released his first version of homebrew application, PSPdisp. This homebrew app lets your PSP become an extra monitor for your PC. This app is basically the opposite of TyRaNiD's RemoteJoyLite homebrew app. Schleu reports that this program will work on both slim and phat PSP's running on custom firmware and it was test on 4.01 M33. This program won't work on Windows Vista.

PC Requirements:

Reasonably modern PC (Pentium 4 / Athlon64 or above) running a 32 Bit version of Windows XP. It may work under Windows 2000, but it is untested. 64 bit versions are not supported, as well as Windows Vista. I would like to provide a Vista version but it will probably never happen due to the changes in the display driver model regarding multi-monitor support.

Installation:

* Windows application, drivers, etc.
* Download the installer below and execute it.
* When it comes to the display driver installation, Windows will warn you that the driver is unsigned, let the setup program install it anyway.
* After setup has finished, open your display settings and enable the new monitor then move it to the position you like.
* Connect your PSP and copy the files from the "psp" folder in the installation directory to the memory stick.

PSP Homebrew Alternative VSHMenu 6.0

PSP Homebrew Developer Red Squirrel, has released another update for they Alternative VSHMenu plugin, bringing it up to version 6.0.



New features include:

- Added five new background colours

- Now Alternative VSHMen・can not be started before of 3 seconds: in this way you can avoid console crashes when you accidentally start it during coldboot or returning from games.

- Now there will be a pause of about one second when you exit from A. VSHMen・ in this way your key pressing will not have any effect on XMB (like happened in past).

- Changed HIDE MAC ADDRESS function in AUTO USB CONNECTION: if you enable it, USB connection will be enable always in XMB! In this way when you connect a USB cable your PSP will be connected to your PC/PS3 without you have to press on special icon! (like in PSP-3000).

- Changed CXMB PLUGIN function in LANGUAGE: now you can select your language from the menu of A. VSHMen・ In this first version, there will be only two language: Italian and English.

- Changed M33 VSHMENU in SELECT KEY: now you can choose what to associate to SELECT key in XMB (M33 VSHMen・ a Homebrew, Nothing).

- Erased all difference of code between CF 3.90/3.95GEN/4.01M33: now plugin will be the same in all CFs.

- Added a homebrew-flasher for the plugin: it will flash the Alternative VSHMenu in your Flash0 directly from PSP without other steps!

- Cleaned the code to try to compensate the increase of the PRX size caused by language translations.

News from Homebrew developers Pirata Nervo. They has update NervOS application to 2.2 for the QJ 2008 PSP Homebrew Competition and so on the Internet. For you who do not know what this application, NervOS is a powerful shell application that's similar to IR Shell. It allows the PSP to play music, photos, games and run PRX news or plug-ins. UMDumper v0.3.0D

Homebrew developer, PhonicUK, released UMDumper a few months ago, and I thought it'll be well worth putting it on front page for everyone to download. This is an application that can read an inserted UMD disk, and dump it as an image to your Memory Stick, so that it can be played without the disk inserted with the aid of custom firmware.

Only M33 based firmwares are currently supported, GEN is unsupported. Furthermore, the author notes that only PSP Games can be dumped. Video and Music UMD disks cause the application to freeze.
